Congested, chaotic and ready for a transformation: Victory Monument
Artist Maria N. Stukoff and creative group Apostrophy’S have launched km.0, a series of artistic interventions set to transform the public spaces of Victory Monument in Bangkok. The artists have developed a multi-faceted approach to connect with users in different ways, always reflecting back on the human experience of one of the most congested and complex sites in the city.
“Victory Monument is one of Bangkok’s busiest intersections with thousands of Skytrain, bus and car commuters passing through each day, together with hundreds of vendors who ply their trade there. It is also known as the ‘zero marker’ for the centre of Thailand, the starting point from which all distances are measured.

Creative Cities: km.0 | Victory Monument, Bangkok
“km.0 symbolises this zero point – a starting point to respond creatively to last year’s Transforming Public Spaces/Change Bangkok projects. The art intervention is located at km.0 to inspire future change in and around Bangkok. Already new projects are starting up, moving the ideas about public art space beyond the starting point into new areas of Bangkok.
“km.0 creates a public space to discover media games on recycling, renewable energy, the environment and brings to life the history of Victory Monument. Km.0 celebrates the history of Victory Monument in a live event of 59 performers sequentially at 6pm and 7pm everyday. The performance ‘Code 59′, questions what Victory Monument is about and is symbolic of its historic dedication. Km.0 is a playful public experience whilst providing new perspectives on how to engage with cities creatively. Equally the artwork celebrates the history and the future of Victory Monument for generations to come.”
