When: March 2009
Where: Tokyo

No, not a trans-continental relocation to Tokyo, but an introduction to the UK’s most talked about public art project as part of the sunset-to-sunrise Roppongi Art Night. To build a bridge between Tokyo and London’s creative intervention with public spaces, the British Council co-presented a talk between Ekow Eshun, Artistic Director of ICA and Chair of the Commissioning Group of the Fourth Plinth, and Fumio Nanjo, Director of Mori Art Museum.

Eshun explained the vision and commissioning criteria of the Fourth Plinth, one of the most significant public art projects in Britain, as well as the cultural context within which public art is presented in the UK. Eshun gave a preview of the next commission, One & Other by Antony Gormley, which will see the plinth occupied for one hundred days, one hour at a time, by volunteers from all over the country, making a living sculpture – an art work that’s a portrait of the people of Britain.
